The real knock-out punch was delivery by the train running me over on the way to Terrapin. One visual that stands out in my mind's eye from the set - seeing as we were at the very back and top of the Omni, was the cool-as-shit lighting effects, especially during LLR when Candice (I guess) used this multitude of powerful "rays" of white light, twirling around Bobby and Jerry as Bob was wailing during the climax of the song, and I was like "uh. But you know what ? There sure were many, many extraordinary sets out of those 104 that I was lucky enough to be a part of. honestly, looking back on 51 shows after that fateful night in March of 1988, I don't remember hearing a set of music that soared like that set. What I will also remember, however, and always be grateful for, was that 2nd set. It had all these weird angles and the sound was always just terrible in that hall.Īnyway, I don't really remember anything specific about the first set - beyond my exposure to the scene and the taper's section, etc. In addition, we had the worse seats in the OMNI, I mean there were 4 folks behind us in the whole place, and remember how G-d-awful the sound was in that pit. So I figured that I would check out this band that I only "knew" through Europe '72. Luckily for me, this show - the Dead's first time back at the ol' OMNI in 14 years - came around near my 3/27 birthday.
